MS Excel World Championship: How Can Knowledge Take You All the Way to the USA?

MS Excel remains one of the world’s most popular office applications, used daily by approximately 1.2 billion people. Is your workday also unimaginable without Excel? Do you know the necessary formulas by heart and can create charts with your eyes closed? Then this is your opportunity to enter an international competition and test your skills against the fastest, most resourceful, and most knowledgeable Excel users. What is the MS Excel World Championship, and what should you know about it? We spoke with Pauls Raubišķis, Head of Marketing of the MS Excel World Championship Latvia.

A Chance to Compete with the Best in the MS Excel Championship

Although MS Excel is often associated solely with office software, it is actually a much more powerful and versatile tool. When people think of traditional esports, games such as Counter-Strike 2 (CS2), League of Legends, and other popular computer and video games usually come to mind. However, instead of battling with weapons and trying to defeat opponents, participants compete by demonstrating their knowledge, skills, speed, and problem-solving abilities. The MS Excel World Championship is a high-level competitive format where victory goes to the participant who can solve tasks both accurately and quickly.

For the first time in history, one of the championship’s qualification rounds will also take place in Latvia this year. Here are the key dates to remember:

Applications are open until June 10. Participation is free of charge for Latvian citizens and residents.

From an Idea to a World-Class Competition: What Should You Know About the Championship?

To learn how the idea for such a championship was born, how it works, and what skills are required to succeed, we invited Pauls for a conversation.

Paul, can you tell us when and how the idea for the MS Excel Championship first came about?

The Microsoft Excel World Championship (MEWC) was first held in 2022, and the concept was created by Andrew Grigolyunovich. While MS Excel is universally recognized, only a small percentage of users take advantage of its full functionality. The championship is based on a simple idea: if players can compete in various video games, why not organize a competition around a program that millions of people use every day?

What makes this office application suitable for a world-class competition format?

How does the competition work, and who is it intended for—Excel experts only, or anyone looking to challenge themselves and try something new?

The competition consists of two stages and is open to anyone with basic Excel skills. First, participants compete in an online qualification round within their own country for a place in the final tournament. The best performers advance to the semifinals and finals in Las Vegas. This year, one representative from Latvia will also earn this opportunity.

Why was Latvia selected this year as one of the countries hosting a qualification round for the MS Excel Championship?

The founders of MEWC are from Latvia, making this a particularly symbolic occasion. We are delighted that Latvia is finally taking its rightful place within the MEWC community.

How does the qualification stage differ from the final?

During the qualification stage, participants compete online from their own computers and from wherever they feel most comfortable. The live final in Las Vegas, however, offers a completely different atmosphere: spectators, professional commentators, stage lighting, and every action performed on the competitors’ screens displayed live on a giant screen.

Wow, that sounds impressive! I imagine the competition is quite intense. How many countries usually participate?

Yes, the competition is highly competitive, with participants from more than 30 countries taking part each year. The number continues to grow annually, which we are very pleased to see. This international competition adds tremendous value to the championship, as every task allows participants to compare themselves with some of the best Excel users in the world.

Can you tell us a bit more about the types of tasks participants need to complete?

The tasks vary greatly but typically involve data organization, formula usage, logical calculations, data visualization, and analysis. In the live finals, participants face strict time limits, making both speed and accuracy critical factors.

Are those tasks adjusted according to participants’ skill levels?

The tasks gradually become more challenging to ensure the competition remains engaging and demanding even for the most experienced and knowledgeable participants.

It’s clear that time pressure can be stressful. What mistakes do participants most commonly make under pressure?

The ability to remain calm under pressure is extremely important. We often observe participants losing valuable time by attempting to solve a task using a complicated method rather than choosing the simplest formula or solution. It’s only natural that in high-pressure situations people sometimes make basic mistakes, even when working with familiar formulas.

Representing Latvia in a world championship quarterfinal sounds like a great honor. Does the winner receive anything else in addition to that?

I agree—it is a tremendous honor and also an opportunity to gain international recognition, including visibility from ASUS and other sponsors. In addition, it provides significant value for one’s CV and, of course, an unforgettable experience.

Perhaps someone reading this interview right now has decided to test their skills and sign up. What advice would you give them to prepare?

I would definitely recommend starting with the fundamentals and then gradually moving on to more advanced functions. It is also beneficial to use the official MEWC training materials and browse the archive of videos on our YouTube channel, where recordings of previous finals are available. Above all, it is essential to practice solving tasks under time constraints, as this is a key aspect of the championship.

What is the key to securing a place in the semifinals and finals?

There is no single secret formula. Success comes from consistent practice, solving tasks under competition conditions, and developing the ability to quickly identify the most effective approach to each challenge.
