Course outline

Digital Accessibility — What It Really Is and Why It Matters

  • What is digital accessibility?
  • How did it emerge?
  • Why is it essential for every organization today?

In this section, you will understand how accessibility improves user experience, expands your audience, and helps create inclusive, modern digital solutions.

Regulations, Standards, and Requirements

  • Key aspects of international and European regulations, including the European Accessibility Act, which comes into force in Latvia on June 28, 2025.
  • WCAG standards.

You will gain clarity not only on what needs to be followed, but also what it means in real-world practice.

The People Behind the Requirements — User Needs and Assistive Technologies

  • Understanding the diverse needs and real-life situations of users with visual, hearing, motor, or cognitive impairments.
  • Insight into how screen readers, Braille displays, and other assistive technologies work, helping you better understand how users actually interact with digital environments.

WCAG in Practice — How to Create Accessible and Compliant Content

  • WCAG principles and guidelines: structure, semantics, navigation, alternative text, color contrast, and form design.
  • Hands-on work with practical examples, analyzing common mistakes and identifying solutions you can immediately apply in your own projects.

Documents and Multimedia for Everyone

  • Creating accessible Word and PDF documents.
  • Developing accessible video content (with captions and audio descriptions).

How to Test Accessibility — Don’t Guess, Know

  • Evaluating digital accessibility using automated tools, manual testing, and user testing.
  • Preparing accessibility statements.
  • Building testing processes that help maintain quality in the long term.

Mobile Applications — Accessibility on the Go

  • Specific considerations for mobile apps in iOS and Android environments.
  • Key differences, common challenges, and practical principles for creating accessible solutions on smaller screens—where space is often more limited than we’d like.

Accessibility as an Organizational Mindset, Not a One-Time Task

  • Integrating accessibility into organizational processes — projects, procurement, content creation, and maintenance.
  • How to make accessibility a natural part of everyday work, rather than an emergency fix when issues finally come to light.
